The single biggest upgrade to the team's PowerPoint workflow isn't a better prompt — it's separating prompt engineering from content generation. One Copilot builds the brief; a different, smarter one executes it. The end output is demonstrably better.
The default way most advisory consultants use Copilot in PowerPoint is to open a deck, click the Copilot icon, type "create a 10-slide deck about X," and hope for the best. That works for a throwaway internal update. It fails for client work because the prompt is underspecified, the reasoning is shallow, and every slide gets the same generic treatment regardless of what it's actually trying to communicate.
The two-stage workflow fixes all three problems:

Stage 1 — Copilot Chat (web mode, no files). The goal here is not to generate slide content. It's to co-author a really good prompt. You tell Copilot the deliverable, the audience, the file names you'll reference later, the slide count, the purpose. Copilot helps you build a structured master prompt that specifies everything a content-generating model needs to do the job properly.
Stage 2 — New chat, reasoning model (GPT-5.2 Think Deeper or equivalent), files uploaded. Open a fresh chat, switch to the reasoning model, upload all reference files, paste the master prompt from Stage 1. The reasoning model does the thinking — reading the files, reasoning about structure, generating each slide's content with proper depth.
Stage 3 — PowerPoint + Copilot in-app. Slide by slide, copy each slide's content from Stage 2's output and feed it into PowerPoint's Copilot via "Create a slide" with your source text. Copilot now has exactly the content it needs and only has to handle layout and design — which is what it's best at.

You have three to ten reference files (reports, proposals, workshop notes, research briefs) and need to build a client-ready deck from them. This is the most common advisory scenario and the most powerful version of the workflow. Every other use case in this report is a simpler variant.

You need a deck and all you have is a topic in your head. This is where most people get generic AI slides — because they prompt once and accept whatever comes back. The fix: use the two-stage workflow, but Stage 2 becomes research, not synthesis.
Your deck's centre of gravity is numbers — portfolio KPIs, benchmarking data, financial performance, survey results. The workflow shifts slightly: Analyst does the analysis, PowerPoint handles the presentation.
